Science is a vocabulary laden field, and mastery of terminology is crucial to student success. Vocabulary cards and annotated illustrations are used to build vocabulary. Vocabulary pyramids are collaborative activities I use once students have a working definition and conceptual understanding of key terms. Students work in pairs to develop unique definitions based on a limited number of words. Poetry is used throughout instruction as a way for students to write for learning.
